"Puck Fair", a Unique Irish Festival

Dia dhuit! This is Katie from the International Relations Division. In this blog, I want to introduce a unique Irish Festival called “Puck Fair”.

What is "Puck Fair"?

Puck Fair is one of Ireland’s oldest and traditional festivals, dating back to over four hundred years ago. The festival is about a goat who is crowned king of a rural town called Killorglin in County Kerry for three days during August.

「パック・フェア」とは？

「パック・フェア」は、400年以上前に遡るアイルランド最古の伝統的な祭りの一つです。この祭りは、アイルランド西部のケリー郡にあるキローグリンという田舎町の王様になったヤギが主人公となり、８月の３日間にわたって開催されます。

Why a Goat?

One of the theories about how the festival came about is that according to ancient Celtic beliefs, the male goat, also known as a “puck”, was a sign of fertility, as well as a symbol of a good harvest at the end of the summer. The Irish word for a male goat is “poc”, which became “puck” in Irish English. Another legend suggests that when a group of English invaders were approaching the village of Killorglin, a wild mountain goat noticed and left his herd to go and warn the villagers, who were then able to protect their village and fight off the pillagers.

There is even a ballad about how this legendary goat protected the village.

なざヤギなのか？

一説によると、「雄ヤギ」は古代ケルト人の伝統的な豊穣のしるしであり、夏の終わりの豊作の象徴でもあったそうです。「雄ヤギ」のアイルランド語訳は「poc」で、アイリッシュ英語の言葉は 「puck」といいます。他の一説によると、イギリスからある侵略者たちが村に近づいてきた時に、野生のヤギが群れを離れて村人に警告しに行ったことで、村人たちは略奪者たちから村を守ることができたそうです。

Catching the Goat

Every year, a group goes up into a mountain range called the MacGuillycuddy Reeks and they try and catch a wild mountain goat. The goat is then brought back to the town, put into a cage and hoisted up onto a throne for three days. Then there is a coronation parade and coronation ceremony, whereby the goat is declared “King of the Town”, or “Puck King”. The goat then “rules” the town for the duration of the festival. A girl from the local primary school is also chosen as “Puck Queen”.

It may seem a bit strange and extreme but don’t worry, the goat is actually treated like royalty, with plenty of food, water and bedding. Depending on the weather and temperature, the goat is also allowed to take breaks. The goat is also regularly checked on by a vet. After the festival is over, the goat is returned to the mountains.

ヤギを捕まえる

毎年、町民のグループは近くの「マクギリカディ・リークス」という山脈から野生の雄ヤギを捕まえてきます。、そのヤギは、キローグリン町に持ち帰り、檻に入れられて、3日間の祭りの間、「玉座」に座らされます。また、祭りのなかでは、王の戴冠パレードと戴冠式が行われ、ヤギは「王様（パック・キング）」と宣言されます。また、地元の小学校の女子生徒が「女王」に選ばれます。

極端で奇妙に思えるかもしれませんが、ヤギは本当の王族のように扱われ、十分な水や餌、寝床が提供されます。天候や気温によって、ヤギには休息時間が与えられ、定期的に獣医による検査が行われます。お祭りの終了後、ヤギは山に戻されます。

Puck Fair Festival

During the festival, there is live music, street performances, busking, a horse fair, kitchen cars, activities for children and fireworks. If you have the chance, I would definitely recommend going to the festival!
