Tianjin

One of China’s 4 Directly-Controlled Municipalities, With A Population of 13 Million

Located 140km southeast of the capital of Beijing and one of 4 directly-controlled municipalities along with Beijin, Shanghai, and Chongqing, Tianjin is a large metropolis with 13 districts and 5 counties, with an economy centered on trade and manufacturing.

Tianjin Port, which looks out over the Bohai Sea and is the largest foreign trade port in northern China, has an important position as the ocean’s gateway to Beijing, with a long history of thriving trade. A canal passes through the city and its tributaries and smaller canals are connected in a well-developed water system. Land transportation includes two railroads and highways that connect Beijing, Tianjin, and Tanggu.

Tianjin is said to be the birthplace of regional performances such as Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera, and acrobatics, and with a classical Chinese stage in the Tianjin Theatre Museum, it is a city of culture and history.
