MANDA-LA IS THE MOST IMPORTANT WORK OF PHOTOGRAPHER MASAHIRO USAMI, WHO VISUALIZES THE MEMORY OF A PLACE THROUGH A SINGLE INDIVIDUAL IN A SINGLE PHOTOGRAPH. THE REAL PLEASURE OF THIS SERIES IS ITS REPRESENTATION OF MULTIPLE TIMES AND EVENTS IN A SINGLE PHOTOGRAPH WITHOUT THE USE OF COMPOSITE TECHNOLOGY SUCH AS CG. THIS TIME, CHIBA CITY, WHERE THE PHOTOGRAPHER WAS BORN AND LIVED FOR 30 YEARS, SETS THE STAGE FOR MANDA-LA. INITIALLY, THE PHOTOGRAPHER HAD PLANNED TO PORTRAY THE DEVELOPMENT AND CURRENT STATE OF CHIBA CITY, PLACING HIS FATHER, MASAO, A FORMER EMPLOYEE OF THE JFE STEEL CORPORATION (FORMERLY KAWASAKI STEEL CO., LTD.), AT ITS CENTER, BUT INCLUDING HIS FATHER'S FORMER COLLEAGUES, WHO WORKED DURING JAPAN'S PERIOD OF HIGH ECONOMIC GROWTH, THE PHOTOGRAPHER'S YOUNGER BROTHER, AND PRESENT-DAY EMPLOYEES OF THE COMPANY. TWO YEARS INTO THE PRODUCTION OF THE WORK, HOWEVER, USAMI'S FATHER, WHO HAD BEEN ITS PIVOTAL CHARACTER, PASSED AWAY.

THE WORK WOULD BE COMPLETED IN SPITE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHER'S STRUGGLING TO REALIZE HIS INTENSION AND IMAGE UNDER COMPLICATING CONDITIONS, INCLUDING STRICT SAFETY STANDARDS INSIDE JFE'S STEELWORKS, AND VARIOUS DIFFICULTIES BROUGHT ABOUT BY COVID-19.

BORN IN 1972 IN CHIBA, JAPAN, IN 1997 GRADUATED FROM MUSASHINO ART UNIVERSITY (B.A IN VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN). THE "MANDA-LA" PROJECT IS SOMETHING USAMI BEGAN AT ART SCHOOL AND WHICH HAS EVOLVED FOR OVER 20 YEARS. EACH INDIVIDUAL PHOTOGRAPH FEATURES A CENTRAL FIGURE, ALL OF WHOM COME FROM DIFFERENT REGIONS AND STANDPOINTS, AND THEN DISTRIBUTED IN THEIR ENVIRONS ARE THE PEOPLE AND THINGS THAT EXPRESS THE WORLD OF THAT PARTICULARLY FIGURE, JUST LIKE THE FORM OF A BUDDHIST MANDALA PAINTING.

そごう千葉店の9階にある、3フロア分の吹き抜けのある空間(滝の広場)において、区切られたギャラリースペースを設けるにあたり、半透明の布の壁を作る。

入り口を入ると、大きなミラーの壁があり、その裏へ回り込むことで作品に出会える。

半透明の布越しに大きなミラーがあることで、周囲の景色がデフューズされて映り込む不思議な存在となる。

普通の壁だと圧迫感があるが、ミラーにすることで、布越しにその先まで続く空間のように感じることができる。

作品壁の後ろ側に、ムービー用のモニターがあり、背後の滝が布越しに見える空間でムービーを鑑賞できる。

滝側からのアングル。

入場者以外の人々からも、半透明の布越しに映像がうっすら見えることで、「中で何をやっているんだろう?」という好奇心を煽ることができる。

模型写真のアングル基準で左の開口がエントランス。

ミラーの壁に沿って左手に進み、作品のある空間に入る。

その後、作品壁の裏側に周り、ムービー鑑賞をして、右側の開口から出る。

 

タイトルデザインは、入り口側のミラー面に施す。

布越しに見えるタイトルは幻想的。

 

作品のサイズのイメージは、約天地2000mm×幅2600mm程度。

真正面の目線に近いアングル。
