Did you know that the 17th of March is Saint Patrick’s Day? This is the biggest celebration of the year for Irish people. Chiba City also holds a St. Patrick’s Day event, so keep reading to find out more!

Who was St. Patrick?

He is one of Ireland’s three patron saints. Born in Wales, he was kidnapped by pirates and bought to Ireland at the age of sixteen. He lived a very tough life in Ireland working as a slave for a cruel farmer. He looked after animals and was forced to eat and sleep outside with them too. One night, God appeared to him in a dream and helped him to escape back to his family in Wales.
As an adult, Patrick dedicated his life to God and returned to pagan Ireland to spread Christianity. St. Patrick is credited with spreading Christianity in Ireland and he used the three-leaved shamrock to teach people about God (the Trinity). That is why the shamrock is the official flower of Ireland. Many people confuse the shamrock with the clover. The shamrock has three leaves, while the clover has four. However, they are both considered lucky!
Did you know that there are no snakes in Ireland? Long ago, Irish people believed that snakes represented evil and the devil. Legend says that St. Patrick banished all the snakes from Ireland, which is why today snakes can only be found in zoos in Ireland.

セイント・パトリックは誰だかご存知ですか？

セイント・パトリックはアイルランド三守護聖人の一人です。ウェールズで生まれ育ち、16歳の時に海賊に誘拐されて異教のアイルランドに連れて行かれ、6年間奴隷として非常に厳しい生活を送りました。パトリックは動物の世話をさせられ、動物と一緒に外で食事をしたり、寝たりすることを強いられました。ある夜、パトリックの夢に神が現れ、ウェールズにいる家族のもとへ逃げ帰るのを助けてくれました。
大人になったパトリックは、キリスト教を普及するためにアイルランドに戻りました。聖パトリックは、三つ葉のシャムロックを手にキリスト教（三位一体）を説き、キリスト教をアイルランドへ広めた功績があります。パトリックのおかげでシャムロックはアイルランドの国花になりました。実は、多くの人はよくシャムロックをクローバーと間違えます！シャムロックには3枚の葉があり、クローバーには4枚の葉がありますが、両方とも幸運なものです。
また、アイルランドにはヘビがいないことをご存知ですか？昔、アイルランド人はヘビが悪と悪魔の象徴であると信じていました。伝説によると、セイント・パトリックはアイルランドからヘビを追放しました。現在、ヘビは動物園でしか見ることができません。

St. Patrick’s Day

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on the 17th of March and is Ireland’s biggest celebration. For Irish people, it is a very special day, with grand parades and festivities taking place all over the country. Furthermore, celebratory events all over the world also take place on Paddy’s Day. Those attending the festivities are usually decked out in green and people also have to chance to spot some leprechauns among the magnificent floats!

3月17日のセイント・パトリックス・ディは、アイルランドの最大の祝日です。アイルランド人にとっても特別な祝日で、パレードを行う等国中で盛大にお祝いします。また、世界各地でも様々な記念イベントが行われています。パレードで、参加者と観客は緑色の服を着ていたり、立派な山車があったり、レプラコーン（アイルランドの妖精）も見えるかもしれない！

Chiba City’s Parade and Irish Festival

This year’s parade and festival will be held on Sunday the 24th of March in Makuharikaihin Park, just a short five-minute walk from Kaihinmakuhari Station. There will be live music and dancing, as well as food trucks where you can enjoy delicious Guinness stout with fish and chips. Tokyo GAA will also be introducing some traditional Irish sports. Why not join the parade and experience Irish culture? Make sure you wear something green!!

千葉市のパレードとアイルランドのフェスタ

今年のパレードは3月24日（日）に海浜幕張公園で開催されます（駅から徒歩5分です）。音楽ライブとアイリッシュダンスのパフォーマンスが行われるほか、フィッシュアンドチップスやギネスビールなどが楽しめるキッチンカーも出店されます。東京GAAもアイルランドの伝統的なスポーツを紹介します。パレードに参加してアイリッシュ文化を体験してみませんか？ぜひ、緑色の服を着て参加してください！
