大覚寺山古墳 Daikakujiyama Burial Mound

English

The Daikakujiyama Burial Mound is the largest and oldest keyhole-shaped burial mound in Chiba City. It was first discovered in 1969, when a woodland area was cleared in order to make way for a new residential development. The diameter of the rear circular part is larger than the maximum width of the front part and it is also higher than the front part. It is estimated to be from the early Kofun Period, dating back to the latter half of the 4th century.
Although no full-scale excavation has been conducted thus far, the results of a radar survey conducted in 2001 confirmed the existence of a burial ground in the rear circle of the site. Based on the distribution of burial mounds in the surrounding area and the size and shape of Daikakujiyama Burial Mound, it is presumed that a leader who ruled the area was buried there.
It has been designated as a prefectural historic site because it has not been destroyed and its ancient appearance is intact, but it also offers a source of great academic importance.
