Wujiang District, Suzhou

A City with Ancient History Known as “the Venice of the East”

As a city that supports the financial hub that is Shanghai, Wujiang has been experiencing rapid development in recent years. Industrial imports and exports have considerably increased since the 1990s, with the goal of increasing industrial scale, collectivization, high-tech technology, and skill levels.

The district looks over a lake that is 4 times the size of Japan’s Lake Biwa, where the canals that run throughout the city continue into tributaries of the Yangtze River. Making use of these resources, the cultivation of turtles and eels is a successful industry, and the specialty product of silk makes up 1/6 of China’s total silk exports.  Tourism is also popular, with gardens and buildings from the Qing dynasty located throughout the city, in an area that was once part of the Wu region during the Three Kingdoms period.

On October 29, 2012, the city of Wujiang became the Wujiang District of Suzhou, due to a change of administrative divisions in the government of Jiangsu Province.
