Municipal taxes include municipal and prefectural inhabitant taxes, property tax, city planning tax, and light vehicle tax.
These are taxes that are levied against individual income for the previous year. People residing in the city as of January 1 are required to pay tax, and those who had an income during the previous year should file a report between February 16 and March 15. The amount of tax is calculated from this report. Inquire at your local municipal tax office's Inhabitant Tax Division for more information.
Company employees and other salaried workers have taxes deducted and paid from their salaries by their companies on a monthly basis. Inquire at the West District Municipal Tax Office's Inhabitant Tax Division for more information.
These are taxes levied upon people who own real estate as of January 1. Inquire at the Property Tax Division of your local municipal tax office for more information.
These taxes are paid by owners of light motor vehicles and/or motorcycles and are due in May. Payments will be for one full year’s worth of taxes as a lump sum. Inquire at the Inhabitant Tax Division of your local municipal tax office for more information.
Salaried workers have their taxes deducted from their salaries at their place of employment each month and paid in a lump sum.
People other than salaried workers are sent a tax notice and payment form at the beginning of June from their local municipal tax office. Individual taxes are paid in four installments: in June, August, October, and the following January.
The local municipal tax offices send out tax notices at the beginning of April. These taxes are paid in four installments: in April, July, December, and the following February.

If you must leave the country after the payment deadline but before your payment forms arrive in the mail, or if you cannot appoint a tax representative, consult your local municipal tax office.
