本圆寺（中央区本町１丁目６−１４）

本圆寺是日莲宗寺院。是显本法华宗（妙满寺派）开山鼻祖日什和下总守护千叶满胤于弘和元年（1381年）开山，由皈依了日什徒弟日义的千叶氏族亲信圆城寺胤久建立的道场。
《门徒古事》中记载，日义曾亲自到访千叶介（可以认为是满胤）的祈祷处、千叶介曾邀请日什到家中，并非常想听日什说法等。由此可见日莲宗已在千叶广泛得到传播，并得到千叶氏族的信仰。另外，该书还记载了宗派对立的事件，如其他宗派把千叶近郊的佛像鼻子打掉，却栽赃于日莲宗等等。从日义到千叶氏族的祈祷处、千叶近郊发生的栽赃事件，可推测出千叶氏族的宅邸其实离本圆寺不远（就在千叶市区）。
本圆寺附近有本敬寺（日莲宗），以前还有正妙寺（日莲宗，明治时期与本敬寺合并）。日莲6大高徒之一日向建立了藻原寺（茂原市）。而据传本敬寺是藻原寺（茂原市）第十代住持大和尚日传于明应元年（1492年）开山得。正妙寺是法华经寺（市川市）的下属寺院，由日高于正和元年（1312年）建造开山的。
中世纪与近世千叶的主要干道就是祭祀着千叶氏族的守护神“妙见菩萨”（北极星）的金刚授寺尊光院（现在的千叶神社）到都川大和桥为止的“本町大道”，以及一直延伸至寒川方向的“市场町大道”。位于城市东侧的本町附近，主要是商工业者信奉的日莲宗寺院聚集于此，从这些都可看出千叶作为城市发展的轨迹。

“혼엔지”(치바시 추오쿠 혼쵸 1-6-14)

혼엔지는 일련종(日蓮宗)의 절 입니다. 겐폰훗게중(顕本法華宗)/묘만지파)의 시조인 “니치주” 와 시모우사 수호 ”치바 미쯔테네”에 의해 코와(弘和)원년(1381년)에 지어져, “니치주”의 제자인 “니치기”에 귀위(帰依)한, 치바가문의 중신인 “엔죠지 타네히사”가 도장을 건립 했다고 전해져 오고 있습니다.
『몬토코사 (門徒古事)』에는 “니치기”가 시조 “치바노스케”(“미쯔타네 라고 추측)의 기도소에 나갔던 일이나 “치바노스케”가 “니치쥬”를 초대하여 그 가르침을 들으려 했던 일이 기록되어 있어 일련종이 치바에 진출하여 “치바”가문이 신봉했다고 추정됩니다. 또한, 다른 종파가 치바에서 가까운 마을의 불상의 코를 잘라낸 일을 일련종이 한 소행으로 날조하는 등, 타 종파와의 대립이 생겼던 일도 기록되어 있습니다.
“니치기”가 “치바”가문의 기도소에 갔던 일이나, 치바 근교에서 이런 일이 생겼던 것으로 보아, “치바”가문의 숙소가 “혼애지”에서 그다지 멀지 않은 장소(치바시)에 있었다고 추측됩니다.
“혼엔지” 근처에는 혼케이지(本敬寺)/일련종(日蓮宗))가 있어, 한때, “쇼묘지”(正妙寺/일연종(日蓮宗)이며, 메이지(明治) 시대의　혼케이지(本敬寺)에 합병)도 있었습니다.
혼케이지(本敬寺)는 “니치렌”의 여섯명의 수제자 중 한 명인 “니코”가 창시한 “소우젠지(藻原寺/현재 모바라시)의 10대째에 종사했던 “니치덴”이 메이오(明応) 원년(1492년)에 창시했다고 전해져 오고 있습니다. 또한, “쇼묘지(正妙寺)”는 “호케쿄지”(法華経寺/현재 이치카와 시)의 末寺(“호케쿄지가 지배한 절)이고 “니치코”가 쇼와(正和)원년 (1312년)에 창시했다고 전해지고 있습니다.
중세/근세의 치바 메인스트리트는 “치바”가문의 수호신「묘켄/妙見」를 모시는 “콘고쥬지손코인”(金剛授寺尊光院/현재 치바신사(千葉神社))으로부터 “미야코강”에 걸쳐 있는 “야마토 다리(大和橋)까지의 「혼쵸도리/本町通り」와, “사무가와” 방향까지의 「시죠마치도리/市場町通り」였습니다.
주로 상공업자들의 신앙을 모였던 “일련종사원(日蓮宗寺院)”이 마을동쪽의 혼쵸부근에 모여있던 걸로 보아 치바의 도시로 발전을 하려 했다고 보입니다.

Hon’en-ji Temple (1-6-14 Hon-cho, Chuo Ward) 

Hon’en-ji Temple is a temple of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism. It is said to be founded by Nichiju, the founder of the Kenpon Hokke Sect (Myomanji School), and Chiba Mitsutane, the shugo (military governor) of Shimosa Province, in the year 1381. Enjoji Tanehisa, a chief vassal of the Chiba clan who devoted himself to Nichiju’s disciple, Nichigi, built the dojo (Buddhist training hall) of the temple.
In the Montokoji (“Ancient Records of the Disciples”), it is mentioned that Nichigi went to shugo Chibanosuke’s (thought to be Mitsutane) prayer temple, and Chibanosuke would call for Nichiju and ask to listen to his teachings, showing that Nichiren Buddhism had made ground in Chiba, and was believed by the Chiba clan. The Montokoji also mentions that conflicts between sects may have arisen, such as other sects knocking noses off Buddha status in the neighboring Chiba regions and then saying it was the actions of Nichiren followers. These kinds of incidents, as well as Nichigi visiting the Chiba clan’s prayer hall, show that the Chiba clan’s manor may not have been located too far away from Hon’en-ji (likely somewhere within the town of Chiba).
Close to Hon’en-ji Temple is the Honkyo-ji Temple (Nichiren sect); in the past, there also used to be the Shoumyou-ji Temple (Nichiren sect, merged with Honkyo-ji Temple in the late Meiji period). It is said that Honkyo-ji Temple was founded in 1492 by Nichiden, who served as the 10th head of the Sogen-ji Temple (in Mobara City), which was founded by Niko, who was one of Nichiren’s six best pupils. Shoumyou-ji Temple is a branch temple of Hokekyo-ji Temple (in Ichikawa City), and is said to have been founded by Nichiko in 1312.
The main street in medieval and early-modern Chiba was Hon-cho Avenue, which passed from Kongoju-ji Sonko-in Temple which worships Myoken, the Chiba Clan’s protective deity (present-day Chiba Shrine), to Yamato Bridge which crosses over Miyako River. The same street continues on to Ichiba-cho Avenue, towards Samugawa. The area around Hon-cho, situated in the east part of town, was mainly a collection of Nichiren Buddhist temples worshipped by merchants and artisans, signaling the development of Chiba as a city.
