Ochanomizu (1 Inohana, Chuo Ward, Chiba City)

This location is known as Ochanomizu (literally, “water for tea”). There was originally spring water here. The Buddhist deity Fudō Myō Ō (also known as Acala) was enshrined beside the spring, so the spring is also known as “the spring of Fudō”. While its waters have long since dried up, there are two main theories regarding the origins of how this location came to be known as Ochanomizu.
The first theory comes from a legend surrounding Minamoto no Yoritomo. In the year 1180, after losing the Battle of Ishibashiyama in Sagami Province (currently Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture), Yoritomo went to Awa Province by boat; supported by bands of warriors including the Chiba clan, he regained his strength and entered Kamakura. It is said that, during the journey, Chiba Tsunetane prepared tea using water from this spring for Yoritomo, who had stepped foot in Tsunetane’s home ground. While the cultivation of tea had already started in Japan in the early Heian period, it was still not widely available, thus there is a possibility this story was made in later years.
The second theory is a legend surrounding Tokugawa Ieyasu. It is said that in 1614, Tokugawa Ieyasu stopped in Chiba on his way to Togane to hunt eagles, and drank tea that was made with water from this spring. Sixty years later, in 1674, Tokugawa Mitsukuni (grandson of Ieyasu, known by the name Mito Komon), who visited the region, left behind writings saying “There is water at the base of an old castle known as the ‘ochanomizu of Tosho-gu’ [Tosho-gu is Tokugawa Ieyasu’s deity title]. To the right, there is a forest of pine trees, where it is said to be the ‘site of the Toshogu Shrine inn’”.
This spring was an important source of water for the people who protected the castle on the plateau, and also was a place for travelers and for horses to refresh on their journey.
In the Kanto region during the Edo period, faith for Fudō Myō Ō had widely spread to the common people, and was tied to the people’s worship of a water deity that protected their precious water. In Chiba Prefecture, Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple (in Narita City) is well known as a place that worships Fudō, but Fudō Myō Ō being worshipped here is understood to stem from that belief of a water god protecting the people’s water.
